Day 3: Luanda Rich and Poor

Yesterday we went for a drive from our house in the city to Talatona, which is where the white folk live, if you're being honest. It's the swanky, oil baron laden part of town that sells strollers for your babies for 56,150 Kwanzas. If you need help doing the math, that's a 561 dollar stroller. To get there you have to drive through the favelas, from my last post.

Anyways, the picture at the top says o futuro promissoa which means 'the future promises'.

I got my first mosquito bite last night, and I'm hoping the malaria pills I'm taking (that are decimating my stomach) will keep me from getting sick.
Today, we've done little. Diogo's parents went to work this morning, so we were left to our own devices. So we slept in until 1pm, and it was nice. Though when we woke up, the power went out, and there was no diesel in the generator. Tonight, we went out to the Ilha. A bit of a lazy day as we're going to go drive down south tomorrow, starting early in the morning.

Onto the pictures:

  1. Wonderful photos, Gillian. It reminds me of my first trip to South Africa - which made a tremendous impression on me. We forget that many in the world live in a very different way than we do. Most, in fact. Makes me feel both "guilty" for my good fortune and inspired to help where and when I can.

Hope that was the wrong type of mosquito to give you any mosquito-born illnesses! Watch out for the striped ones - they're the Dengue skeets! Got myself bit by one of those last year - not a good idea. :) Love to both you and Diogo - auntie
